Cookies and Similar Technologies Policy

Cookies are small pieces of information, normally consisting of just letters and numbers, which online services provide when users visit them. Software on the user's device (web browser) can store cookies and send them back to the website next time they visit. Cookies are a specific technology that store information between website visits. They are used for various purposes, such as remembering what’s in a shopping basket when shopping for goods online, supporting users to log in to a website, analysing traffic to a website, and tracking users' browsing behaviour.

Cookies can be useful because they allow a website to recognise a user’s device. They are widely used in order to make websites work, or work more efficiently, as well as to provide information to the owners of the site. Without cookies, or some other similar method, websites may have no way to ‘remember’ anything about visitors, such as how many items are in a shopping basket or whether they are logged in. There are some other technologies, similar to cookies, which can also identify and 'remember' website visitors. These include, for example, using certain characteristics to identify devices (device fingerprinting), using scripts, tracking pixels, plugins and social media buttons.

Some cookies and similar technologies, particularly those that track users' browsing behaviour across the web are perceived by data protection regulators as privacy-intrusive.

  • Strictly necessary cookies. These are cookies that are required for the operation of the website and include technologies that help us save your cookies preference and keep our website secure.

  • Strictly necessary cookies are 'on' by default and we use them on the basis of our legitimate interests. All other cookies are 'off' by default so we will seek your permission to use them.
  • Analytical or performance cookies. These allow us to recognise and count and number of visitors and to see how visitors move around our website when they are using it. This helps us to improve the way the website works, for example, by ensuring that users are finding what they are looking for easily.

  • Functionality cookies. These are used to recognise users when they return to our website and to provide various functionalities. This enables us to, for example, personalise content for them and remember their preferences.

  • Targeting cookies. These cookies record users' visit to our website, the pages user have visited and the links users have followed. We will use this information to make our website and the advertising displayed on it more relevant to user interests. In aggregate form this information is usually shared with third parties for the purpose of advertising.
