After a nightmare 2020 and a rough first half to 2021, it’s no wonder we all want a break. Despite a slow return to normality after months of restrictions, many of us are suffering from a lack of motivation - at work, at home and socially.

Especially with pubs and restaurants reopening, it can be easy to feel pressured into doing as many activities as possible. But using all of your ‘social cards’ at once is a sure fire way to burn out. Read on for our tips on prioritising your mental health to help you overcome feelings of low motivation while ensuring you make time for yourself too.

It’s normal to suffer from a lack of motivation

Low motivation often arises when we agree to do a task that we don’t particularly want to do. A good example of this is taking on a project at work that you hate but agreed to anyway. Before you know it, your mind is on strike and that’s when the low motivation kicks in.

The way out of the mindset brought on by this sort of situation is to take an open and honest approach. There’s nothing to be ashamed of in asking one of your colleagues for help, or even requesting to give up the task entirely in favour of something you feel you could contribute more to.

Low motivation can also sometimes be a warning sign that something isn’t quite right, so try to listen to what it’s telling you. You never know, it may even spur you on to make a big change in your life.

Mental health tips

If you find yourself getting stuck in a cycle of low motivation, negative thinking and anxiety, it’s important to address these feelings quickly so you can learn how to overcome them. These tips from Floe will hopefully be useful for you to try the next time you’re feeling restless.

  • Mindfulness - This technique is very powerful for alleviating stress and anxiety.By trying to be more present in each moment, we can experience our lives to the fullest without our minds racing. Start by paying close attention to what you are doing right now, and really try to appreciate your surroundings.

  • Break the negative circuit -When you feel your trail of thoughts spiraling down a particularly negative road, mentally and firmly say ‘STOP’ to yourself. Instead, undertake a task that will bring you positive thoughts - even something as simple as Googling your dream holiday or having a walk around the park.

  • Play some uplifting music - As well as bringing good vibes, did you know that music can reduce our heart rate and regulate our blood pressure? A tune that you really enjoy can have a big impact on how you feel.

  • Jot down what you’re thinking about - This is really a powerful trick to lay down and set aside your worries. Writing about whatever comes to mind, or even just what has happened to you that day, can lift some of the pressure off your shoulders.

  • Deep breath in...and let it all go - Breathing exercises can help relieve stress, refocus us after a period of low motivation and even prevent panic attacks.
